In Melbourne Fringe 2011, I exhibited PRESSt – an idea inspired by Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges furniture (1972) combined with my Master of Design thesis study of cardboard furniture typologies that culminated in the development of a new, innovative method of cardboard furniture construction.
Optimal design is often the result of a recursive process, rather than linear, and so the 2016 Fringe Furniture Festival was a launching pad to review and improve the original concept. Like PRESSt, SEEDt is an exemplar of Eco-Modernism; I went back to the roots of Modernist principles – specifically, how form ideally follows materiality. The result is more sustainable, efficient and has greater design integrity.
